Welcome to Next Level Leadership 2021. Learn, Lead, and Link leadership best practices to your leadership journey. Houston ISD Office of Leadership and Teacher Development in partnership with Houston ISD Human Resources are excited to provide these sessions and learning experience for aspiring and current leaders.
During the general session, participants will receive a welcome message from Interim Superintendent Dr. Grenita Lathan, Chief of Human Resources Julia Dimmitt, and Officer of Leadership and Teacher Development Angela Milon.
The Leadership Development Department and Human Resources-Recruitment & Selection partner to provide this leadership development and networking opportunity as part of the Next Level Leadership Series and the Houston ISD’s “Grow Your Own” Initiative—Spring 2021 Leadership Summit. The theme of this leadership event—“Learn. Lead. Link.”—focuses on leading in the new environment of hybrid or blended learning, which requires a new skill set, as well as best leadership practices needed to propel current and aspiring leaders, both internal and external candidates, to the next level in their careers. Since increasing capacity of current Tier II campus leaders and “building the bench” for the next generation of principals remain among the key objectives of HISD Leadership Development and HR-Recruitment & Selection, the participants will have opportunities to learn what it takes to be a leader in HISD.
Participants will hear from a leadership panel comprised of effective campus and district leaders who came through HISD leadership pipelines, from first-year principals to experienced lead principals and School Support Officers. These leaders will provide insight into their personal journey to leadership and other valuable leadership experiences.
Participants will engage in the interactive experience that will expand their capacity to provide high-level coaching and development to teachers and Tier II leaders that positively impacts school culture and improves student achievement. The experience will include applications for the virtual and face-to-face learning environments.
In this session, participants will have the opportunity to learn about HISD’s Assistant Principal/Dean and Principal Pools, including the selection process, assessments, and tips for applying.
Participants will explore the use of the influence to lead others rather depending on the authority and power. Participants will leave with guidelines to create a plan to for the next steps towards leadership. Information regarding aspiring leadership cohorts will be provided.
Participants will discuss ways to gain trust of the stakeholders in the school community, be seen as competent and dynamic, and manage their emotions and stress in the new “normal” of hybrid learning and virtual interactions.
Measuring UP- Participants will be able to begin quantifying accomplishments in career experiences to tell a more descriptive and evidence-based story for hiring mangers' considerations during the hiring process.

In this session, aspiring leaders will have the opportunity to learn about marketing their campuses, building their hiring teams and candidate profiles, and engaging with and welcoming new teacher hires.
In a recent study, district leaders, principals, and teachers reported higher levels of burnout during the Coronavirus pandemic than the general population, twice as much difficulty sleeping as a result of stress, and higher risk of depression. The sheer volume of work, implementing CDC guidelines, worrying about the social and emotional health of students and their families, and a lack of time to focus on planning, teaching, and learning were the major causes of stress that can lead to burnout. Participants will engage in deep discussion and two powerful group activities that will improve their physical, mental, and emotional health, which will ultimately help them be more effective in their roles. Participants will learn ways to inspire themselves and generate creativity to start or continue performing at a high level.
